Nothing whatsoever, as I discovered, to do with the musical software, Wreckless Music Ejay is an American hiphop artist who I have reviewed a couple of times in the past. Kinda liked So Focused (Stand Up) (June 2008) and I still have it on my hard drive - even if I haven't played it in a while. It says something that it's still there, believe me. I am a compuslive pruner; a head here, and arm there, I have no mercy. Only the very best tracks survive the onslaught and it shows that Wreckless tracks have the legs to last a while. Hip hop is also one of the genres I am most harsh about getting right, and depends on the next track....

The lo-fi way that Wreckless works with works best when he's sharp and to the point as So Focused showed and I'm glad to see that it's also a major part of Shine. What is also apparent is that the musical backing track is taking no prisoners either and - as weird as this sounds - sound like something Barclay James Harvest would have come up with back in the day. Put that against vitriolic urban rap and believe me the effect is strangely familiar.

Catchy, instantly rememberable choruses seem to be a usual feature of Wreckless Music Ejay tracks and Shine is no exception; it has a great one. Mind you it has to because otherwise that backing track would snatch it all away, so keen is it to get your attention. What you should do, above all, is to give this track the time to work its way into your head because it is an excellent rap - and I don't get to say that very often.

Excellent Indie hiphop. Highly Recommended.

Hip hop has come a long, long way since its early beginnings in the streets of New York in the early 1970's. Like many people, my first exposure to it was courtesy of Malcom Maclaren in the late 1970's but then I had the good fortune to spend most of the 1980's working in NYC recording studios and witnessing first hand many of the names that were to make it big in the genre. All of which fired up a definite love in me for the arts (of all kinds) that this movement threw up not the least of them being the music, the dancing and - my own favourite - the graffitti art. It was the music that caught and held me though and with the advent of the internet age, it has returned to it's original roots.

With all its original faults.

Hence many of us on Soundclick feel beseiged by peep-my-s*** wannabes who have no clue to how clueless they are and that isn't a healthy position for the genre to be in. As hard as I am on other genres, I have a special hard on for wannabe rappers, as many have felt to their cost. Wreckless Music have skated on the thin edge a time or two and I haven't yet heard a track that would make me go YEAH, although I've recognised that the basics are there. Although never more so than on the first WM track I reviewed Gemini (September 2007), a very fresh sounding double rap that actually worked a treat. Still, to his credit, I haven't had to really throw my toys out of the pram and thats saying something.

Although So Focused suffers somewhat from the same lo-fi problems his other tracks have, it's a much more pointed, clipped appproach than I've heard before. It's all about flow at the end of the day and on that score Wreckless Music just delivered the goods, no matter what you might think about the production and the music. The best musical accompaniment to a tight rap is a sparse one and Wreckless scores again with a very basic, but highly effective, arrangement that serves to punctuate the rap perfectly. Oh and it has a killer chorus, especially if you like the genre. Now, this is what I've been talking about. When it works, it works and no argument and this one works a treat soooooooo.......

Excellent indie hip hop. Highly Recommended. (I'm keeping my copy).

HISTORY OF WRECKLESS MUSIC

THE MUSIC LABEL CONCEPT HAS BEEN A WORK IN PROGRESS SINCE EARLY 1992. IT HAS BEEN THROUGH A CERTAIN METAMORPHASIS OVER THE YEARS. IT ALL BEGAN FROM YOUNGSTERS BUYING INSTRUMRNTALS AND PUTTING THEM IN A DOUBLE CASSETTE DECK RADIO PLAYER USING HEADPHONES IN THE MIC JACK BECAUSE WE WERE TOO POOR TO GET ONE. WE WERE UNIVERSAL INC. BACK THEN. LIKE A LITTLE CHILD THE LABEL WAS ENTERGETIC AND EAGER TO DO AND CREATE ANYTHING EVEN RESEMBLING MUSIC, AND LIKE A CHILD THINGS WERE RUSHED AND HALF DONE BUT WE WERE HAVING FUN. AS A RESULT WE WERE WRITTEN OFF AS HOBBYIST. ANGRY THE CHILD THREW A TEMPER TANTRUM LIKE CHILDREN DO AND WENT ON TO FOCUSING ON TO OTHER THINGS. LOST IN ALL THE CLUTTER THE CHILD'S BEST FRIEND WENT ON A 5 YEAR SLUMBER TO CONSERVE STRENGTH NEEDED FOR IT WAS WRITTEN GREATNESS WOULD BE ACHIEVED. 1999 THE OLDER AND WISER CHILD WAS AWAKENED AND HUNGY TO PROVE LIGITAMACY IN THE GAME. ALL-STAR SERIES MUSIC WAS THE OLDER MORE WISER RESULT. THE CONCEPTS WERE MORE INVOLVED. THE PLANNING WAS MORE THOUGHT OUT, BUT THE MONEY WAS NOT THERE. THE RESULT OF THIS WAS ALL-STAR LYRICS BEING WASTED ON MEDIOCRE RECORDING AND UNORIGINAL TRACKS. HURT BY THIS THE PRE-TEEN WENT OFF ON A JOURNEY TO GET THE FUNDS NEEDED TO "START" OFF RIGHT. AFTER A YEAR OF GRINDIN' THE MONEY WAS THERE BUT THE LOCATION WASN'T. AS AN OPTOMISTIC TEENAGER, ALL-STAR WAS READY ANY WAY. AS A RESULT OFF THIS WHOLE ENTIRE SONGS WERE STOLEN AND USED FOR OTHER ARTIST. THESE ARE THE MISTAKES THAT A TEEN MAKES THINKING THAT THEY KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYTHING. ALL-STAR DECIDED TO GET SCHOOLED ON EVERTHING AND REINVENT THE BEING. WRECKLESS MUSIC WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2005. ARMED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE WRECKLESS WENT ON TO PUT TOGETHER THE WRECKLESS CAMP CD CREATING A LOCAL BUZZ OVER SEAS. ARMED WITH DEDICATED SOLDIERS READY TO SUICIDE BOMB THE GAME JUST TO GET ON WRECKLESS IS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?
